PIONEERING

SINCE 1904

A LEGACY IS BORN.
THE ORIGINAL SINCE 1904.

Who doesn't know it: the Thermos flask. What is considered perfectly normal today had to start somewhere. But once the technology was developed, there was no stopping it. The Thermos flask quickly became an indispensable companion for adventures, workers and families.

And today, it's hard to imagine a world without the THERMOS brand that is a household name for multiple generations. The journey continues. It came to stay.

1892

SPRINGBOARD INNOVATION

Good stories start with an idea. Like the story of Sir James Dewar and THERMOS. The Scottish scientist was working on a way to store chemicals at a constant temperature. The result was his invention in 1892: the first vacuum flask. To do this, he placed a glass bottle inside a larger one and extracted air from the space in between. To produce more stable vacuum bottles, he gets glassblowers on board.

GLASS PROTECTED BY STAINLESS STEEL

German glassblowers Reinhold Burger and his business partner Albert Aschenbrenner produce the required glass bottles for Dewar. Smart: they develop a protective stainless steel cover and obtain a patent for it.

1904

THE ORIGINAL IS CREATED

The fire for the idea continues to burn and the glass-blowing duo of Burger and Aschenbrenner found a company in Berlin to sell the vacuum flasks. The right name is quickly found in a regional contest: "THERMOS", derived from the Greek word for heat (thérme).

1906

GOOD FEELING RIGHT FROM THE START

The American businessman William B. Walker meets Burger during his travels in Berlin. He is immediately impressed by the idea and the THERMOS brand and sees great potential for it in the USA. Walker makes plans to import the products and takes over the patent rights.

1907

ACROSS THE BIG POND

On January 31, 1907, Walker founds "The American Thermos Bottle Company" in Portland, Maine in the USA. He opens the first factory in Brooklyn, New York, and enlists the help of Burger. With his knowledge, machines are purchased and glassblowers are trained for production.

1911

THERMOSSETS CONQUER THE WORLD OF WORK

The innovation is well received: by 1911, more than 15 million Thermossets have already been sold to workers. There's nothing like hot drinks at work!

1928

FROM FISH TO ICE CREAM

Technological progress increases the possibilities for Thermos containers: new sizes, shapes, colors and applications emerge. Thermos containers are the forerunners of today's refrigerators. And the success story continues to gather pace.

1971

THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH

From the UK via Japan: THERMOS products are already sold in over 120 countries worldwide. The choice of products is growing and Thermos containers for food or drinks are becoming increasingly popular in different countries.

2015

BACK TO THE ROOTS

Born in Germany, raised in the USA: in 2014, the original also comes back home in a business sense. The alfi GmbH company successfully relaunches the THERMOS brand in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

2021

FLY THE FLAG

Real cult originals that are made for each other: With FC St. Pauli, the soccer club from Hamburg that is steeped in tradition, THERMOS decides to sponsor a sports club for the first time for the 2021/22 season. The basis for the brand cooperation, which not only delights die-hard fans: values such as open-mindedness and a tendency to do your own thing. THERMOS remains a regular on the team sheet in the 2022/23 season.

2022
